Matt and Joe had been together for 10 years, and throughout that time, becoming parents was a dream they often shared. After researching their options, they decided to take the next step and attend an adoption information session.
Matt recalls, “The process moved faster than I expected. It was intense and sometimes exhausting, but every step felt right. The different stages made us really reflect on who we are and what we could offer. The training prepared us for some of the challenges ahead, which was invaluable.”
Joe added, “Our social workers were incredible. We built such a strong relationship with them that it felt almost strange when the process came to an end. But the moment we were approved — that’s when I truly believed we were going to become parents.”
When they were matched with their son, excitement filled their hearts. Soon after, he began the transition from his foster carers into their home. The bonding took longer than they initially expected, and they were reminded that every child’s attachment journey is unique. The close relationship they built with their son’s foster carers was a lifeline — their advice helped guide them through those early days.
For Matt and Joe, the magic of family life was found in the small, everyday moments: the chaos of shopping with toddlers, the relief of parking in the parent-child bay, settling into daily routines, and hearing their son call them “Daddy Joe” and “Daddy Matt.” Those moments made everything feel real — like they were truly a family.
Then, out of the blue, their social worker reached out with unexpected news: a sibling had been born, and they had the chance to adopt him too. The decision was easy, even though it meant going through the adoption process again and considering their son’s feelings about welcoming his brother.
The second adoption went more smoothly this time, and the whole family felt more settled.
“We couldn’t imagine them growing up apart” Matt said. “Our lives have changed so much for the better.”
Now, the four of them share family trips and celebrate holidays with joy. Christmas is all about the kids. Life may be hectic, but it’s full of laughter, love, and unforgettable moments.
To anyone thinking about adoption, Matt and Joe encourage you to take that first step. Attend an information session or request an information pack — it could be the beginning of your own incredible journey
