Brittany had always known she wanted to be a mum. After sharing her hopes with her family and receiving their wholehearted support, she felt ready to take the first step on her adoption journey.
She contacted AiM and attended an online information webinar, which gave her the opportunity to learn more about adoption in a relaxed, no-pressure environment. What began as a chance to explore her options soon became a clear path forward. Throughout the process, Brittany was supported by a dedicated social worker who guided her every step of the way.
With previous experience working with children, Brittany had open and honest conversations about the level of need she felt able to support. The assessment process was in-depth, but Brittany quickly understood why.
The training helped me truly understand the importance of birth family contact and how vital it is to keep my little girl’s story alive as she grows. My social worker was so supportive and honest with me throughout.
As a single adopter, Brittany was fortunate to have a strong network of friends and family around her. It wasn’t until she became a mum that she fully realised just how essential that support would be. AiM also invited her loved ones to attend an information session, helping them understand the experiences many adopted children have faced and how they could best support Brittany and her daughter in the long term.
Brittany attended several training sessions that helped her recognise the individual needs of children who have experienced trauma and loss, and reflect on what she could offer. After being approved at panel, she was soon matched with her little girl.
Transitions took place over the Christmas period and were slightly longer to ensure they were child-focused and sensitive to her daughter’s needs. Brittany began by spending time getting to know her routine in the foster carer’s home, before days at Brittany’s house, and finally welcoming her home full time.
“My little girl has taught me so much about myself. She’s shown me that the small things don’t matter – what matters is that she feels safe, loved, and healthy.”
While her daughter has experienced a slight speech delay, Brittany has been proactive in seeking support, accessing private therapy alongside ongoing guidance from the AiM adoption support team. Her daughter attends Theraplay sessions, which use play to help children express emotions and build secure relationships.
“I can’t imagine life without her,” Brittany says. “Our little family is perfect, and watching her grow and develop is the most incredible thing.”
Brittany encourages anyone considering adoption to take that first step and find out more.
“Parenthood is challenging, but having a strong support network makes all the difference. Adoption has changed my life in ways I never imagined.”
