Steph always dreamed of becoming a mum. When she realised, she had the love, space, and readiness in her heart and home to welcome a child, she took the first step — making a simple phone call to start her adoption journey.
In less than 12 months, Steph’s dream came true as she joyfully welcomed her daughter into her life.
For me, the adoption process was deeply therapeutic. It’s so thorough, encouraging you to reflect on your life, your experiences, and how you would nurture and care for a child. It really made me think about the kind of mum I wanted to be.
The moment she was approved at the adoption panel was unforgettable. “I cried the moment it was confirmed — everything suddenly felt real. I was overwhelmed with happiness knowing I was about to become a mum.”
Like many single parents, Steph had her worries and doubts at the beginning. “I wondered if I could manage the responsibility of raising a little person on my own. It felt daunting at times.”
But she’s grateful for the incredible support network of friends and family around her. “That support has been everything.”
Being a single adopter has also deepened the special bond between Steph and her daughter. “Having just one set of rules and boundaries makes it easier to create a safe, secure attachment. Our connection grew so quickly.”
When her daughter started saying “Mummy,” Steph says her heart would pound with joy — moments like that made everything feel truly magical.
Steph also attended a therapeutic parenting course, which at first she wasn’t sure she needed. “But I’m so glad I did. It gave me valuable tools and techniques to support my daughter, especially for challenges that might come in the future.”
She also appreciates the ongoing support available, including free online sessions she’s attended. “Knowing there’s a team behind you makes a huge difference.”
Steph’s advice to anyone considering adoption is simple: “Just make that phone call. My experience has been incredibly positive, even though there are challenges. Sometimes the behaviours are tough to handle, but the joy and love far outweigh any difficulties.”
